Concrete Work in Marion

Cross the Great Pee Dee River east of Florence on US 76 and the next county seat you reach is Marion, named for Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. The town has kept its old courthouse square and a Main Street lined with big trees and older homes, some of them among the oldest houses we work on anywhere in the area. Away from the center, the streets turn into post-war ranch houses and then newer homes and open land.

Concrete Work in Marion

The concrete around those homes covers every age, and a lot of it has reached the point where it needs attention. A walk that has been stepped over for fifty years, a driveway that was poured for one small car, a back stoop barely big enough for a grill: those are the jobs that bring us across the river, along with new pours for families building or adding on at the edge of town.

Marion homes and lots

On the older streets near downtown, lots are deep and shaded, and the concrete is often a patchwork: a walk poured one decade, a driveway another, steps added later. Pieces settle at different rates, so you get lips, gaps and steps that rock. Further out, the brick ranches from the sixties and seventies have the same narrow single-lane drives and small back stoops we see across the Pee Dee.

Most Marion requests we get fall into three groups: fix what is broken, widen or replace a driveway, and add an outdoor space out back where there was only a small slab. On the oldest houses we take extra care where new concrete meets old brick, porches and foundations, so the work looks like it belongs to the house.

What the ground does here

Marion sits on the same sandy soils over clay as the rest of the region, and much of the county is low and flat, near the river and the swamps that feed it. Water is slow to leave. A slab poured on loose sand in a yard that stays damp will lose its base along the edges and settle toward the wet side.

Then there are the trees. The oaks and pines that make the old streets so pleasant also put roots under walks and driveways, lifting panels and cracking them. Pine needles and sap stain bare concrete as well. We dig out soft soil, compact a proper base, set slope away from the house, and plan joints and edges around the roots that are going to stay.

What we do in Marion

Repair is a large share. We cut out and repour lifted walk panels, rebuild broken steps, and replace driveway sections that have settled. When a slab is too far gone, we break it out and pour new. There is more on lifted walks and broken steps and how we decide between a fix and a replacement.

We also pour new driveways, garage floors, carport and shed slabs, and back patios, whether that is a plain broom finish or something with a stamped pattern and color. If a bigger outdoor space is what you are after, take a look at a patio out back first.

Marion is across the river from our home base, but it is a regular stop. We often pair Marion visits with jobs over toward Mullins or south down in Lake City. We pour across Florence County and the nearby Pee Dee towns, from Darlington and Hartsville to Lake City and Marion.
