Driveways, Patios and Slabs in Darlington

Most people outside the Pee Dee know Darlington for the raceway on Harry Byrd Highway and the Labor Day weekend crowds it brings. Live here and you know the rest of it: the courthouse square at the center of town, the older homes on the streets that run off it, and the farm and country lots that start almost as soon as you leave the city limits. That mix shapes the concrete work we do here, and it is a little different from what we see in Florence.

Driveways, Patios and Slabs in Darlington

In town, the homes are older and the driveways and walks have had decades to settle and crack. Out in the county, the lots are bigger and the jobs are bigger with them: long driveways, shop slabs, equipment pads.

What we pour in Darlington

Driveway replacement is the most common request. A lot of in-town Darlington drives are original or close to it, poured thin over whatever soil was there, and the sandy base has washed out from under the edges over the years. We tear those out, rebuild the base with compacted stone, and pour a new drive with proper joints and enough slope that water runs to the street, not the garage.

Patios are the second big one. A back porch slab that is too small, or a patio that has sunk toward the house, is a common sight on older Darlington lots. We pour plain broom-finished patios and stamped or decorative ones, and there is more on how we handle backyard pours if you want to see the options before we talk.

Out in the country we pour slabs for pole barns and shops, aprons where a gravel drive meets the road, and pads for tanks, generators and equipment.

Pouring around Darlington weather

Summer in Darlington is long and hot, and afternoon thunderstorms come up fast between June and September. Fresh concrete does not like either one. Pour late in a ninety-degree afternoon and the surface dries ahead of the slab underneath; get caught by a storm before it sets and rain pits the finish. So our summer pours start early, the trucks are ordered for first light, and we keep curing compound and covers on hand.

We also watch the forecast from the Weather Service office in Wilmington, which covers Darlington County, and move a pour a day rather than risk a finish we would have to tear out. Winters here are mild enough that we pour most of the year, with a few cold snaps where we hold off.

Permits, property lines and getting the truck in

Darlington is its own city in its own county, so permits for a driveway or work near the street go through Darlington's offices, not Florence's. Where a drive meets a state road, the state has a say too. We sort that out before the job is on the calendar.

Access matters on older lots. Narrow side yards, a fence, a low branch or soft ground after rain can keep a concrete truck from reaching the back of the property. When that happens we plan the pour around it with a pump or buggies, and we walk the route with you during the estimate so there are no surprises on pour day.

Towns around Darlington

From Darlington we are a short run to Florence to the southeast, and we are out in Hartsville most weeks, where the jobs lean toward established neighborhoods and small businesses. Quinby and the east side of Florence are close as well. We pour across Florence County and the nearby Pee Dee towns, from Darlington and Hartsville to Lake City and Marion. If you are between towns, send the form anyway; most places in the area are within reach.
